Ever since Sean was lucky enough to attend a nature-based preschool deep in the heart of Texas, he made a promise to himself that his office would always be outdoors. From there, the domino effect leading to his obsession with the outdoors is easy to trace. Learning to move on the land as a barefoot three-year-old, climbing on trees, and chasing after tadpoles in the local creek taught him lessons that have never gone away. Lessons that promoted the fluid interaction of people and nature, free nature play, and the unrivaled joy of child-like exploration. After growing up wild, Sean attended the University of Texas at Austin to study Environmental Science where he learned to combine that passion of nature with the knowledge necessary to enact change.
Upon graduation, he spent the next handful of years sharing his passion for the outdoors with youth in a meaningful way. In the front range of Colorado, Sean led high schoolers on service projects that would benefit the local parks and open spaces. The following year, he moved to Utah for the first time and worked for a wilderness therapy program to assist in the personal growth of teenage boys as they backpack through the Utah backcountry. In wilderness therapy, nature is considered to be one of the primary teachers, allowing people to grow in ways that might have previously been unknown to them, a sentiment that Sean relates to deeply.
In 2019, Sean left Utah to move back to his hometown of Austin, TX and pursue a position teaching wilderness skills to youth. While teaching, he learned many new techniques, topics, and methods for sharing these skills with others. Skills like friction fires, navigation, knife carving, and knot tying have proven to be his favorites to teach.
As a teacher and mentor, Sean hopes to inspire kids on a daily basis to never stop using their imagination and to just have fun in nature! He wants every day in class to feel like a new adventure because that is how he approaches teaching. Nature is the biggest classroom in the whole world and there are limitless lessons that can come from just being out there and exploring.
